Sidecar racing is a unique form of motorcycle racing where two people share one machine. One is the driver, who controls the throttle, brakes, and steering. The other is the passenger, often called the “monkey,” whose main job is to shift their body weight constantly to keep the bike stable. Unlike regular motorcycles, sidecar bikes do not lean naturally, so balance depends heavily on the passenger’s movement.

The passenger moves across the platform, hanging far off the side in corners, sometimes just inches from the ground. In left and right turns, they must reposition quickly and precisely to counter the forces acting on the bike. If they react too slowly or incorrectly, the sidecar can lift or lose grip, which makes teamwork absolutely critical.

These machines are built specifically for racing. Modern sidecar bikes are low, wide, and very fast, with powerful engines and specialized tires. They can reach speeds of around 180 mph or 290 km/h on long straights. Because of their design, they handle very differently from standard motorcycles, requiring a completely different driving technique.
