1. The first dirtbike race happened by accident when organizers couldn't decide what to call it. On March 29, 1924, at Camberley Heath in England, motorcycle club members were planning an event.
2. The winning bike from that first race weighed about as much as a modern mountain bike and topped 25 miles per hour. Arthur Blencowe Sparks won aboard a Velocette 250cc two stroke with a twin cylinder engine.
3. The first purpose-built dirtbike appeared in 1914, a decade before the first race. Siegfried Bettmann created the BSA Scrambler by modifying existing motorcycles for offroad use.
4. Yamaha created the first mass produced dirtbike by sending prototypes to California to be destroyed. Desert racer Neil Fergus and tester Gary Griffin spent six months in 1967 pounding prototypes to dust in the desert.
5. The initial production run sold out instantly and created a new industry. Yamaha predicted they could sell 12,000 DT1s in 1968.
6. Modern motocross bikes evolved from that street legal dual sport through racing modifications. The Genuine Yamaha Tuning kit transformed the DT1 into a competition machine.
7. The American Motorcyclist Association created a professional championship in 1972 because Americans couldn't win against Europeans. The Trans AMA series featured top European riders competing on American tracks.
8. A Honda CR250R two stroke produces 59 horsepower from a 249cc engine at 8,500 revolutions per minute. The bike weighs just 213 pounds dry with a five speed transmission.
9. The global dirtbike market reached 5.7 billion dollars in 2024 and grows at 6.2 percent annually. North America accounts for 40 percent of global revenue with a market size of 3.83 billion dollars.
